A Pennsylvania Dutch Classic thickened with tiny flour dumplings called rivels! Keep it traditional with the original recipe (you can add some ham cubes to make it more hearty), or go Cajun by adding smoked sausage, green pepper, onion, diced tomatoes, and shrimp!
¾ cup Ham-flavored Bean Soup with Rivels Soup Starter 2 ½ cups water Optional: ½ cup cooked or deli ham, diced (optional)
Bring water to a boil in a medium-sized pot. Add soup starter and stir well. Return to a boil. Reduce heat. Add diced ham, if desired. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, cover and let steam for 5 minutes.
Makes 2 1/2 cups of soup. Entire package makes approximately 5 servings of soup.
